Lunch Crunch by Brianna Madigan

Schools are struggling with high fresh-food costs.

“Say goodbye to star fruits and kiwis,” TFK says. In school cafeterias around the country, cheaper basics like apples and oranges have replaced fancy fruits on the menu. Food prices are also rising at the same time that schools are making nutrition a top of priority. School districts are watching every penny, reviewing menus and raising prices. More than 30 million kids buy school lunch each day.

Since 2004, more than 90% of all U.S. schools have trimmed the fat from lunches. Foods high in fat, salt and sugar have been replaced by low-fat milk, fresh fruits and vegetables.

The price of milk is also going up in price, according to TFK.  It went up by 33 cents already by August of last year, 2013.

Does your mom or dad pack your lunch? Or do you pack your own lunch? If so, what do you put in your lunch?

Packing a healthy lunch is a good, active choice for you to make yourself. In order to have a “healthy lunch,” your lunch should contain the following. This is going to keep you healthy and active during your regular school day:

  • Fruit or Vegetable: Strawberries, watermelon, carrots, or beans.
  • Protein: Meat, soup, chicken, or some sort of sandwich such as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Chicken, turkey, or ham.
  • Dairy: Cottage cheese, or any kind of dairy. Yogurt, cheese, or milk.
  • Grains: Rice, whole wheat bread, pasta, oatmeal, or breakfast cereals.
  • Snacks: Crackers, chips, or any sort of desert, but only a little one.
